Americorps has become Foodstampcorps

The Progressives are doing everything to drive up people's government dependency and economically break this country. Darrel Issa needs to look into this use of Americorps.

Quote:
Politicians originally sold AmeriCorps as an alternative to big government — a program to “renew the ethic of civic responsibility and the spirit of community throughout the United States.” With bipartisan support, the program has morphed into an all-purpose progressive slush fund. Instead of reining in the national service boondoggle, Washington has turned taxpayer-subsidized helping hands into a legion of Nanny State handout helpers. Goodbye, AmeriCorps. Hello, FoodStampCorps.

Yes, across the Internet, the feds are recruiting AmeriCorps VISTA (“Volunteers in Service to America”) workers to apply for jobs as publicists for the welfare state. Their mission: to sign up as many people to federal food stamp rolls as possible. Because, you know, the record-breaking 12 million that have been added since Obama took office is apparently not good enough.

Michelle Malkin » Goodbye, AmeriCorps. Hello, FoodStampCorps.
So why can't the Churches feed the needy? That's what my Church does. And what happened to the separation of Church and State?

"National Affairs managing editor Meghan Clyne reports that the administration is roping in left-wing churches to aggressively promote food stamps. With institutional support from first lady Michelle Obama, the FoodStampCorps will train church members to apply for food stamps after religious services; and “‘encourage eligible families to enroll their children in (government-subsidized) school meal programs’; if organizations operate day-care or after-school programs, they are advised to pursue reimbursement for meals and snacks through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (a federally funded, state-administered welfare program). Places of worship are asked to serve as feeding sites for the Summer Food Service Program — another federally funded, state-run welfare project.”

I'm on SNAPS or as you call them food stamps and without them I would starve.

I've been unemployed since 05/08, when my unemployment ran out, SNAPS is the only thing I have available to me so I can at least eat. Up untill '08 I had worked for 40 years until my lay off, I do every thing possible to find work, any kind of work.

Only last week, Lowes had an add for 1 seasonal job over 500 people showed up to apply, I got my email rejection within 24 hours. Every job I apply for there are 100's of applicants, in the last 3 weeks I've gotten 3 interviews and still no job. At 60, I still have plenty of up to date skills and last year spent the last of my savings on a phlebotomy course and got nationally certified and still no job. There are phlebotomy jobs in my area and I do get interviews sometimes, but again, I'm competing against 100's of people for 1 job.

The reason why food stamps have continued to go up is, in many areas of the country there is still no recovery, I live in NE GA, the state still is at over 10% unemployment and my area is at 11%. Many of those who have found work are under employed working for minimum wages and or part time work, thus more people are on food stamps and many like myself have run out of unemployment benefits and now qualify. While I was getting my unemployment benefits I didn't qualify, but after they ran out I do. There are also the elderly who are on a fixed income and qualify for food stamps.

The few churches in my area that have food banks are turning away people because there is still such a need. They have fewer donations and more people than they can help.

I'd much rather have a job than be on food stamps as most of the MILLIONS of people who are still unemployed. At 60 I never thought I'd be in this position of horrific poverty and it's frustrating knowing your doing everything possible to find work.

The number of people on food stamps will continue to rise as people fall off unemployment rolls and have been unable to find work and until there are more jobs...just a reminder statistically there are still 5 people for every 1 job. In my state companies are still bleeding jobs and some are closing their doors. In my town and the town next door most shops have closed, the grocery stores in strip malls that have additional shops are vacant. Many like myself have run through our savings trying to stay afloat, we have nothing left.

Pretty offensive you would begrudge those of us who have lost everything and are still looking for work to have food on the table...you'd rather have us starve. For the 40 years I worked and payed my taxes, I never begrudged anyone who'd fallen on hard times and needed the help of food stamps, we were once a great nation of compassion for those who needed some help, but now it's all about greed and a growing hatred towards the poor.

If someone qualifies for food stamps what difference does it make who helps them sign up. The article link no where mentioned "brown shirts" and I find the title offensive - the inference of a Nazis is beyond offensive...more hatred of the poor.

I am so sorry for your situation. Unfortunately, you are lumped into a category of people that would rather live off of the government than find their own means. I know you are not in that category, but far too many are.

I really hope your situation improves. I am one of the underemployed and find myself in your boat with applying for jobs and I am one of hundreds to apply for one job.

Prayers for luck in your employment search.

Kudos to you for posting the truth, unfortunately it is something some here will refuse to see.

Thank you for posting this.

Your story is very similar to the majority of people on food stamps who are either unemployed or underemployed.

The poor are always the first to blame. It's really sad.

Now Obama is going after the American truck drivers, trying to destroy their line of work, he's hell-bent on bringing in foreign truck drivers and having them take over our highways. Obama has done nothing to create jobs, he is creating more government dependency -- why don't the liberals question why?

They know full well why.

It is their only chance at a socialist utopia, with the central government knowing exactly what everyone needs to do to live in peace and no violence.

So your church delivers food to needy people, enough to feed their families three meals a day, long term? Or do they, like mine, collect food for a food bank?

Obama is not trying to destroy the truck drivers line of work, link please. Clue for ya: the President does not really create jobs, it is not his job nor should it be. Yes, through the bailouts he did manage to save some jobs and allow some businesses to survive thus setting the stage for future hirings. The economy and jobs is based on what buisnesses do and how much consumers buy and businesses are starting to hire back employees, it is a slow recovery I agree but it is turning around, we were in deep ressesion and still are but things are improving. Over the next couple of years we will be well on our way to recovery, it is the natural cycle of the business world, we go too far and the market rights itself then recovers, the larger the adjustment the longer it takes before it recovers.
Who is more dependent, those laid off? I think it is good thng that our government helps those in need during hard times, it is the least we can do to help our fellow citizens and it is the right thing to do. I do not understand the righthand way of thinking that we should not help our fellow citizens when they need a helping hand, maybe you should walk in thi shoes and you might grasp the issue better, hopefully you will not have to do so to learn to care more for your fellow man.
