Just because many Americans like to watch UK's royal family doesn't mean we want to adopt them or have a royal family of our own.

I used to be a big fan of Princess Diana but I never wished she were a princess for America.

They are interesting on a couple of fronts.

Firstly, they are a window to the past. They, at least the older ones, are a thowback to more formal, regimented time. Its very archaic and thus of occassional interest.

Secondly, and less flattering, they are one of the biggest soap operas going. A dysfunctional trainwreck that jives with their symbolic role. They probably always were, but then came the 24/7 media.

Want my own here? No way.

What the OP is referring to are the same people who worship celebrities, you know, the folks who read People magazine.

I dont care for it either, I think it is all jibberish.
