As we approach another election cycle, the topic of apathy will be rearing its head. Often we hear suggestions that we should adopt the Australian model, by requiring citizens to vote, rather than giving people the freedom to not vote. And I often hear from friends who do choose not to vote, that it is not apathy at all. They refuse to vote for the lesser of two evils as an active form of protest. So that's not apathetic.
Apathy is typified by simply not caring. Not caring about the choice. Not caring about the quality of choices.
I think, though, that sometimes apathy is disguised. When someone is close-minded, they can be considered apathetic. Not caring about the choice. Not caring about the quality of choices. Sometimes people become so invested in partisan politics, they care so much about one side, that, really, they become apathetic because they no longer care about the whole story.
When it's easier to ignore the valid perspectives of the other side, and people stop caring enough to listen, isn't that apathy?

Sorry, the last people I want to see voting are the ones that nominated SC's Al Green as dem candidate...because they liked his name, same as the singer.
I'll take apathy over rank ignorance and stupidity anytime, which is what those voters displayed.

Don't you think that ignorance and stupidity are symptoms of apathy? Doing research on candidates to rid the ignorance is the opposite of apathy, isn't it? Being satisfied with "I dunno", is akin to "I don't care", because "I dunno" is easily remedied.
I was going to write a long post on apathy but I just couldn't get interested enough.
I'm glad a lot of people don't vote. People who are not informed should not vote. If they are just tossing a coin to make their decision then it waters down the votes of those who actually take the time to learn the issues. Low voter turnout is usually a good thing.
