TAMPA --
The Hillsborough County School Board approved spending $900,000 to purchase iPads for the district.

The school district will buy 900 iPads to be handed out to students and teachers at Tampa's two new single-gender schools that will open next fall.

Some of the money is coming from a three-year, $11 million federal grant the district recently received.

Officials said the iPads will not be used as a replacement for books quite yet.

Instead, officials said the iPads will be used to help students in language classes, to study science and to watch lessons in three dimensional video.

Hillsborough County School Board approves $900K for iPads

Unbelievable....!!!

As long as it is other peoples money they give away....What is wrong with books, which is way cheaper or a different tablet which cost half the money...

Well..guess iPads trump actual teachers.
At $500 a pop that's about 1800 iPads..doesn't add up if the school is using $900K to buy 900 iPads..where is the rest of the money going ?
Will they even last a full semester ?

Go FedGov !

Once a school board receives a federal grant it's up to the school board on how they use the money.

The federal government did not say "Here's some money go buy some IPads"

If you're made at anybody be made AT THE LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD.

Before you can get a federal grant, you have to tell them what you are going to do with the money.

In fact, here is a RFP offering money to buy more of them
http://media.navigatored.com/documen...pplication.pdf

Its the federal government VOLUNTEERING money to buy them.. True, the school board asked for the money, but they can only ask for what the federal govenrment is offering, and within the guidelines specified. In this case, the federal government is offering money for Ipads specificially.

It's amazing at how much local money is spent because of "matching federal grants" and the like. Of course, the money comes out of the taxpayer's hide on both sides.

Kind of like one thug saying to another: "I'll mug this guy for $50 and you mug that other guy for another $50, and we'll have $100 to buy drugs!"

Unless we slash government to the bone at the federal, state and local levels, we'll all continue to work half of our time (if we have jobs at all) just to pay for massive, corrupt government. And BTW, the only time in recent history that a nation has recovered from a debt as massive as our government's, was in the early 1800s when England massively cut back government spending and the size of government, and the economy boomed and recovered. So if we want the nation to survive another 5 years, we'd better vote for Ron Paul and stop the Washington insanity that created and perpetuates our economic mess.

Actually Ipads are about $700-$800, and you know dam well they arent buying them at a wholesale price.. The other $200-$300 is probably for extras like warranties, and insurance..
