Little or no oil coming out of Libya for over 3 months, yet the price of oil has dropped $15 a barrel and gasoline has dropped .45 cents a gallon. AND there are no shortages.
But from the administration - because of the Libya situation, we have an emergency where we have to release 30 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. [1 million a day for 30 days]
What will we hear from the left wing media in a couple of weeks-'Because of the Presidents leadership and making a decisive decision to release the oil, the cost of gas has dropped, saving you alot of money.'
Where was the 30 million barrels when gas was $4.00?
30 million barrels is less than a two day supply for the USA.
anyone who thinks this is anything but Chicago Politics deserves the Government they get...
Here's a better idea, lets improve public infrastructure and public transit. Better bus and train schedules. More bike friendly roads. Give people options that CAN work compared to just a car, and they might chose the alternative. Public transit isn't used because it sucks in most places. Schedules lead to lots of time wasted. If you had more, smaller buses with more routes (especially out in the burbs) than maybe it wouldn't be such a waste of time, and a bus transporting 15-20 people is way more efficient than 15-20 cars doing the same thing. People don't bike commute because biking on many roads or sidewalks in American cities is suicide. I have gotten hit once on bike by a car that didn't know to stop before the corner and the driver wasn't looking. (I was almost hit today on a run because an idiot woman on her phone wasn't looking, good thing I was)
If Americans have good, non-car options, then they'll choose those options. Then (gasp) demand for gas and gas prices will drop.
His actions have proved his limit on any business knowledge
the best thing Obama could do for America is submit his
resignation as the "Hope & Change" of Presidential on the job training is not really working out that well.
If he were not a government employee he'd already be gone !
?? This is what I don't get about the far right. They b**ch up a storm that Obama isn't doing anything to reduce the gas prices, then he does all he can, and they continue to whine and complain even more
This is not all he can do and it's just a temporary band aid solution at best. If he wanted to take a proactive approach he could for example propose removing the ethanol mandate, instead he is trying to increase it.

Are you prepared to increase taxes like requiring bike registration to pay for this or are we going to rob more revenue from gasoline taxes?
Prices were already dropping. I can't see any reason for the move except for political gain.
People will equate prices dropping with Obama's actions.
They do not think about the chain and how long it takes a change in price to filter down to the consumer.

I'm in favor of bike registration for one reason. So bike thieves can be held accountable. Bikes require less road space, help people get exercise (which decreases medical cost) It is inconvenient enough carrying a change of clothes and trying to find a place to rinse the sweat off. (lots of places of work don't have showers) Why should those who want to make the choice have to pay more money for decreasing the cost for the rest of us??
In terms of infrastructure for public transit, I think gas tax would be appropriate. Here's why.
1. You are never going to equal the convenience of an individual car when compared to public transit. Not to mention the privacy factor. Those who are sacrificing the convenience and privacy should not be de-incentivized. If you want the added comfort, you can pay extra. There's your choice.
2. If you got enough people on board with taking public transit (because it was almost as convenient as a car) then demand for gas would fall enough that a tax wouldn't be noticeable. The only people who would lose out would be the oul big wigs because they'd be selling less oil.
3. If less fuel is consumed for gas and transportation. Then it can also be used for home heating, water heating, plastics for other things (medical supplies come to mind).
There is no reason people need to cart around 4000-8000 pounds of metal with them wherever they go. It doesn't make sense. Incentives should reflect that.
Like Tower of Power says "There is Only So Much Oil In the Ground"
Washington's most powerful business lobby panned the Obama administration's decision to tap the nation's strategic oil reserve Thursday, calling the move "ill-advised."
"Our reserve is intended to address true emergencies, not politically inconvenient high prices," Karen Harbert, CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Energy Institute, said in a statement.
Politically inconvenient? And these are people who need tax cuts?
He shouldn't have released anything from the SOR. I agree, that was stupid of him to do.
