Think about it:

Unless you were educated in the South (), you know that Abraham Lincoln was NOT an abolitionist, bound and determined from Day One to free the slaves. Lincoln was personally opposed to slavery, but pragmatic when it came to policy.

At the time of his election, Lincoln had no intention of freeing the slaves, or extending them citizenship. It was only when the South revolted that Lincoln's policies (and presumably his personal beliefs) began to change.

As we all know, events of the war largely drove Lincoln's evolving policies on slavery and racial equality. Ironically, he is known to history as "The Great Emancipater".

So, to get to my point- could something similar be said for Barack Obama and gay Americans? Obama was initially opposed to equal rights for gays, personally, and as a matter of policy. But, his position "evolved", particularly when VP Biden more or less forced his hand, and he took a public stand at last in favor of gay marriage. Was that announcement a reflection of personal change, or a "war strategy" (2012 election)? Or maybe, both?

Will President Obama be known to history as The Gay Lincoln?

If you mean that Obama lied his arse off about his true stance on these and other issues to get himself elected, then...whatever.

Obama will go down in history as one of the greatest Presidents in all history. Not since Reagan have we had such a beloved and popular President.

Not even close.

Obama is a self righteous coward who doesnt go against poll numbers. If he actually implemented policy he campaigned on you could argue he is/was the greatest president in recent decades, but alas here we are.

His job approval numbers don't refect that however.

Funny because when Obama first ran for President he was pro-DOMA. Then he "evolved".....lol.

He says whatever his handlers say is best for him at any particular moment in time.

If I recall Obama was not even in office a year and the comparisons started with him and Lincoln. At least they both are from Illinois and started their political careers there. Other then that I think it is a silly comparison between bringing about the end of slavery and gays being allowed to marry. Big difference.

Obama didint have to deal with the murderous, treacherous, dispicable, rable that was the southren govenrment...as did Lincoln.

Gay rights has been people driven...not politician given.

Obama had nothing to do with these last two equality outcomes.

Just as Hitler did... he was beloved as well. And had similar policies.

Disconnected much?

Gays connecting their right to marry, and abolishing slavery and the civil rights movement? Let me tell you something, there were no rainbow flags, parades, and designer condos for slaves and southern blacks in the 20th century. Talk about building a bridge FROM nowhere!
