I've seen arguments where people have asked why should they be paying for a public transportation project that they'll never use. While I see their point, couldn't the same be said about a project that is not about public transportation?

I am against the wars in Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq but I am certain that some of my tax dollars are going towards that.

I guess the point that I am trying to make is that liable to make an argument like that. Thoughts?

Because those people don't realize that while they may never use an infrastructure directly, they still benefit from a society they've chosen to live in, which benefits from such investments. Take a simple example of an airport. While a person may never fly, but living in a city that benefits from commercial developments due to that airport is still benefiting from it.

People also seem to conveniently forget that tax dollars don't just subsized public transit, they also subidized road construction and maintaince. There was a study completed recently Do Roads Pay For Themselves? Setting the Record Straight on Transportation Funding - U.S. PIRG that concluded roads do NOT pay (ie...via gas taxes) for themselves either.
