The nationwide average price of gasoline topped $3 a gallon Friday for the first time since last summer, and prices were breaking records in several Western states.
The U.S. average price for regular at the pump was $3.012 a gallon, up more than two cents from Thursday and 31 cents higher than just a month ago, according to motor club AAA.

The average price is close to the nationwide record, not adjusted for inflation, of $3.057, set Sept. 5, 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, according to AAA.

Adjusted for inflation, the record high was in March 1981, when gasoline cost an average of $3.223 a gallon in today's dollars.

While people gripe about the high prices it has not really affected people's driving habits.

I have heard that it will be at 4 dollars an average by beginning of Summer, and I had also heard it will increase by several dollars in our near future, people don't want to do anything about it, so they will keep raising it, cause simply no one cares to boycott or do anything bout it, just like with everything else going on here, no one cares.

I hear more and more about our limited refining capacity playing a large role in the amount of gasoline available. If that's the case, why doesn't the US build more refineries?

Iran is a good example of that theory. It's safe to say that they aren't sqeezed for oil yet they only have 1 (or so I understand) refinery. They have problems with the gasoline supply also.

Anyone in the oil business here?

It sure is changing mine--I glide down hills, I don't fill the tank up each time, but pump about 10g in the hope I'll find a less expensive station, I walk while in town and don't use the car; I don't take many or any leisurely sightseeing trips around a town/city--something I always did when petrol was less expensive. Today in CT the average cost for 87o is $3.19.

But then again I may be the rare exception.

Yes, I try to coast also. But lately I have been filling up to the tippy top because it seems like gas just keeps going higher and higher. . . but bottom line you are still "on the road!"
