In any case, it’s certain that Perry’s Ponzi-scheme claim is in no way original. Not only have a raft of conservatives called Social Security a Ponzi scheme over the years, quite a few very respectable liberals have done so as well. It is clearly wrong either to treat the Ponzi-scheme analogy as unprecedented or to rule it altogether out of legitimate public debate.
Oh, please DO read the examples of prominent liberals using the same term to describe what we SHOULD all know about SS.
There IS no money, just a bunch of IOUs. There IS a crisis with the program, which is underfunded by TENS OF TRILLIONS of dollars.
I don't get what the big deal is about Perry saying that. Heck, I thought that was one of the best things he said. It's TRUE! It's a mandatory Ponzi scheme. That's why I think it's so odd that people are freaking out because he actually told the truth. I thought that's what we wanted our politicians to do?
Fix the Ponzi scheme:
1- apply SS "tax" to all income not just the 1st $108k
2- means test SS
re: the latter, SS is meant as a social safety net. some net! prvt business saw it as a way to slowly do away with pensions, matching contributions, or any type of retirement program...
just do what "we" used to...save on your own and when that fails you, move back in with the kids. heck they are moving back in with us already cuz of the economy so that's one issue we don't have to worry about. now if we could only start saving and not have an economy driven solely by consumption
