AFP - US auto giant Ford has started construction on a $1 billion manufacturing and engineering complex in India as it bets on the country to help drive global growth, a company statement said on Tuesday.
The new manufacturing facilities in Sanand in the western state of Gujarat will create 5,000 jobs, and will be able initially to produce 240,000 vehicles and 270,000 engines a year, Ford said.
The first vehicles and engines are due to come off the line in 2014.

Yeah, I'm sure it's got nothing to do with the government colluding with Ford's competition (don't forget the UAW owns GM and Chrysler) to try and force it out of business.

Ford might be shooting itself in the foot. A lot of Americans buy Ford because they want to 'buy American', and Ford was like the quintessential Ameican company - no more I guess.
18,000 rupees = $380.00 per month... and those are the "well paid" permanent employees. This article is about contract workers being screwed by getting paid 1/3 that for the same jobs. Hmmm... I wonder why Ford would move operations there....
The Ford Motor Company has had subsidiaries all around the world since the 1920's. These subsidiaries build vehicles tailored to the local countries in which they are based, using local employees to design, engineer and build the vehicles. You might as well kvetch about Ford's British, German, South African or Brazilian subsidiaries.
Bottom line is that a vehicle designed and built in the United States isn't going to sell very well in India and a vehicle designed and built in India probably wouldn't sell at all in the United States - the two cultures have very different transportation wants and needs.
