Well, I can name many things (teaching to a test instead of teaching to learn, for one among many)

(I found one of the comments interesting: It states that Finland is #1 in education, school doesn't start until age 7, standardized testing is rare, and they spend 30% less per student than we do. I wonder how true all that is?)

Record-low SAT scores a wake-up call - CNN.com

EDIT: Sorry, should I have put this in the Education forum? It seems it is of national interest and is certainly a controversy,
as well as a recent news story, but if it should be moved I apologize and so be it.

I think part of it is many kids think they can be the next "Justin Bieber" and just upload a few songs and get instant riches once they are discovered. Why waste time in school when you can be the next Steve Jobs or Bill Gates?

It might be that between parents who don't take an interest in their children's education and parents who take such a huge and forceful interest that it causes children to burn out quickly, most kids aren't getting the educational backing at home that they need or deserve.

As a former teacher, I can attest that both helicopter parents and uninvolved parents are indeed a big problem.

When standards are lowered you get subpar results.

One size fits all, Dept. of Education, Federal style. You know, too big to fail.

What Rita said.

I live in what many would consider an aging upscale subdivision in a growing school district.
The parents interests are football and the vestal virgins. 75% of parents I interface with weekly have no clue what kids should learn in school. They spend more time considering the kind of car to buy, than the kid's future. One kid was in 7th grade before the mother or the school discovered the kid could not read.

Read The Dumbest Generation.
We better all learn Chinese.

Texas has independent school districts. We have locally elected boards of trustees and locally hired superintendents.

Can't blame this on the Feds.

Actually that was the conservative answer to the probem. I agree with Rita, number 1 problem is the parents.
