Common courtesy in a classroom, or a church, or a library... is to be quiet unless asked to contribute.

Well isn't anyone going to question the 'manner' in which this teacher addressed the issue?

His admitting his reasons being "superstition based" are enough for me to conclude he understands he's in the forefront of realizing the origins of the "god bless you" admonishment after a sneeze so isn't anyone going to suggest he use his obvious in-depth knowledge on this topic to 'educate' his students.

Perhaps a portion of a class devoted to the origins of common exhortations and whether they should be maintained or dropped as irrelevant in todays society should have preceded an enjoinder to resist the impulse.

He jumped right to stage four of the process in that well known teacher's fall-back "because I say so that's why" positon that ALWAYS brings lack of respect as it's reward.

Any teacher I've known over the years would have attempted, if feeling strongly enough about a relatively benign issue such as this, to educate rather than dictate.

By which dictation do you cite? And what constitutes contribution?

Likely he is citing the "rules of courtesy" from the book of "Whatever I think it should be, whenever I think it should be". Its a common liberal classic.

Common courtesy to say God Bless you when someone sneezes. It also shouldnt cost a student grades simply because a teacher doesnt agree.

Manners is lacking in our society. Whats next? Saying thank you going to be a terrible thing?

Yep, you got it. Wait until they get old enough to work then they get to find out if your'e high up enough in job title/command no one will show you that common human courtesy. I see it a lot where the white collar management alwasy gets the god bless you and if not in management well then it's nothing. It should be all or no one. As far as a simple kind thank you I see it dwindleing on the road when one driver allows another to make the turn. Waving the open hand with a quick smile saying thank you is becoming rare. Even a simple opening of a door is rare to hear thank it's like some people, especially women, are so arrogant they expect it when no one really has to hold it open for them when it's really out of courtesy.

Seems the teacher needs to loosen his Jockeys. I'm not a churchgoer, but I'll say "bless you", "God bless you", or "Gesundheit" if someone sneezes in my presence. And if nobody blesses me (and I'm with friends or family), I say "God bless me - no one else will"!

It's certainly overreacting to dock grades for a common courteous expression.
