What an awful question by gallup.... the methodology shows the question was "Some people think the government should promote traditional values in our society. Others think the government should not favor any particular set of values. Which comes closer to your own view?"
First, what is a "traditional value" is not defined. Is it regulation of sex? Honesty in dealing? Maintaining cultural traditions? Being against Abortion? Is it picking whether the typical social conservative agenda du jour is and calling it "traditional values" vs. a liberal agenda on social issues? Second, what is "traditional" for one age group would not be "traditional" for another age group.
I guess the key is that some people think the government should be promoting ANY type of values.... which I'm not necessarily against on its face... as long as they are the kind of "universal values of humankind" type stuff. Honesty, integrity, fair dealing, etc...
The government shouldn't promote anything besides considering ways to improve our country, get Americans back to work, defend our borders, and kill off this deficit. Besides that...government, "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY LIFE!!!"

43% of adults aged 35-54 say the same as do 51% of those 55 and older.
Promoting somebody's values is not a valid function of government.

"Little House On The Prarie" was BASED on the real life experiences of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
The show may have been a fantasy, but the values and stories were based in reality of the time.
There are a couple of other values going on in those days I doubt you would want to discuss. The shows portray a story that as I said never existed, no real issues, no uglyness, and comedy was the goal in Andy Griffith, not reality.
As for the actual topic here, you maintain your own Values and alow others to maintain theres, the government has no business in our private lives, as a rightie I would think you would know that, if not try reading the Constitution some time, look for anywhere where the government has the right to tell us how to live, in fact it limits their power to do so.
