Seriously, are these kids that moronic and out of touch? I vaguely recall being 18-21 in college irrationally thinking I knew everything but damn. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be flipping cars because a coach (who hasn't really coached in a decade or more) in his eighties was fired because he was in a way part of a child molestation cover up. Come on, kids, get your ish together.
Too much time on their hands. The identity of the school is too wrapped up into one game and one man. Man is perceived to be treated unfairly and off they go.

Pretty much. The University chose that road and built its fundraising on Paterno's reputation and accomplishments.
The inability to seperate rational thought from emotion of these students is key. Add to that the herd mentality of mobs and you have a disaster in the making. I can recall when being identified as playing part in tearing down goalposts was an offense worthy of expulsion from my university, along with property damage charges. Too bad these young adults didn't think out the consequences of their actions. Hard way to discover that one's hero is a fallable human.

Each student is prob paying $500 a year or more in extra tuition costs just to fund the stupid football team anyway.
"Can someone explain what Penn State students were actually rioting about.\"
Some would say that Joe Paterno was more than just a football coach, he is certainly plays a bigger role in the life of the university than coach and for many he is the embodiment of Penn State. Now does that mean that their should be violent protest in his name, I can't think of anything about this decision to justify that but there is a good deal of reason to protest his departure.
