Despite them being protrayed as the polar opposite, both are very much alike. Both are Utopian in idea and have not been implemented in any central society. Libertanism is for an access economy rather than ownership economy. This is the same thing that is intrinsic in the communist manifesto.

Being that OWS are occupied by hard core leftists and hard core libertarians, shows you that both ideologies aren't that much different.

I could use the same faulty logic to state that because both Italian Catholics and traditional Shona (indigenous South African) are opposed to homosexuality then Shona and Italian aren't that much different. Do

Also I do think that communism has been implemented in several states: North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, and Cuba currently are or have been communist.

Private property rights are the foundation of liberty. Communism does not recognize the right of the individual to hold/control private property.

The OP's assumption and this thread are a fail.

While I would never argue that they are necessarily related ideologies, anti-statist socialism is not incompatible with the broader definition of libertarianism. There are left-libertarians who are in agreement with far more conservative libertarians on many issues, particularly, those issues that involve state interference in personal rights. The true opposite of libertarianism is authoritarianism. The latter can readily be found on both sides of the political/economic spectrum, as can the former.

Libertarianism and communism both look good on paper, but fail in reality. Either extreme is not how the real world works and those who hold those ideologies will never be able to see that.

Communists should be able to see it...they've had plenty of practice. Libertarians, however, are still waiting for our chance.

When has communism been implemented?

Conservatism and communism aren't that far apart either. Both are centered on community/family.

Of course it does. Communism permits private ownership, but not of Capital. There are variations of communism and other philosophies that don't permit ownership of anything. They are intensely communal.

Communism has never been implemented in modern history.

Reality bites.

People would be libertarian for about 15 minutes before they gave up.

People would last a lot longer as communists before they quit.

The two biggest obstacles to communism are diversity and intelligence. I always use the MP3 Player as a great example of how communism fails. You're going to ask 2,000 people in a town to give you $6 Million and you let use factory space to research, develop and market MP3 Players?

Yeah right. You got people like your grandma voting. They aren't going to be hip to that. Communism would only work if you have incredibly intelligent people who were incredibly knowledgeable in every single facet of every single thing, who could make informed decisions, and that just isn't going to happen.

And then you'd have 2,000 different opinions and even if you only had 1,000 differing opinions, you could never reach a consensus to move forward on anything, so nothing every gets done.

The US was largely a libertarian system until around 1913, at least for white males. I think it went ok. And after that, only gradually was the libertarian character taken away bit by bit. The big national social programs didn't start till FDR, and gradually grew from there. Gun control and the war on drugs didn't really take off until the late 60's., along with the general rise of the nanny state from 1970-2000. We still have relatively free speech even today.

It's really relatively recently that we can definitively say that we are no longer a libertarian nation.

So it's wrong to say that libertarianism has never been tried. It has, and it worked well.
