I don't consider myself poor and I don't have any of those things. I would imagine if I were poor I'd have even less. When I was a struggling college student I didn't have AC, I didn't have cable, I didn't have a cell phone, I didn't have video games or fancy gadgets, and I had a 10 year old car.

I don't see where this thread is making fun of any families, poor or otherwise, but in case you don't know where this money will come from and has been coming from in another stimulus attempt it is money that was to be paid to the Social Security fund and it was originally passed by FDR and his Democrat Congress. All of us have been paying into that fund since the late 30s but just about a year ago the Congress saw fit to take that money from the fund.

The worst part of this is that all Social Security taxes go into the General Fund and become a part of something they weren't intended for. Come on, and try to get off the poor people story. Obama is doing that very well without people like you trying to help out. We pay much more than that $49 per month for cable for out satellite fee but then I am sure you think we don't need to liveso far out in the sticks that we can't have that cheap cable.

BTW, was there something on that Maher thread you didn't like? I read only the OP on it and was too much in agreement about anti-Maher that I stayed away from the rest of it.

I am low to middle class so I don't see the reason for all the Obama class war talk. Do you consider people who are so poor that they can't afford $49 per month cable bills without my Social Security money as middle class? If so no wonder Obama has you snowed.

That is my point.

Yep, it is OK. Well it would have been ok if the Democrat Congress under Eisenhower hadn't started spending what they called the SS surplus every year and not kept on doing it with Democrat controlled Congresses for about 40 years. Oh yes, the fund would have had a real surplus if not for that. Now they are continually spending it all and taking out more from the General Fund to pay for that monthly SS check, along with taking out less than called for from all earners that they want to extend 60 or 365 days depending on what each party thinks it will take to buy votes next fall.

$40 for me means cutting back another doctor's appointment. Maybe my psychiatrist, since I already had to cut out my therapist. I should be seeing a therapist weekly in order to dial down the number of meds I'm on, but it's cheaper to medicate than actually deal with the fallout from having cancer at a young age. The next to go is my oncologist, and even then I'm stretching out the time in between appointments more than he would like. Or it means doing another load of laundry in my bathtub. I already do quite a bit of the wash there.

No cable, A/C, flat screen tv, or even heat half the time here. The only reason I have a cell phone is because I'm on the family plan - and my cell phone is my only phone. I don't have a landline at home. I have a car because I needed transportation during chemo - before then, I was walking a mile to public transportation. My food budget doesn't stretch beyond rice, beans, and pasta. Occasionally buy meat on sale... fresh fruits and veggies are a foreign term at this point.

Please don't think you understand the working poor until you've been there and have to make the decisions that some of us have to make.

I guess you'll need to sell your PC and internet connection next thankfully.

My dad calls me and whines to me constantly about his $120 cable bill..

HELLO DAD, DID YOU EVER THINK OF SHUTTING OFF SOME OF THE EXTRA SERVICES YOU PAY FOR?

Do you really need Howard Stern on demand?

Tempest believes anyone who can pay their bills without government help = rich
