"The new law says the family, based upon marriage of a man and a woman whose mission is fulfilled by raising children, is an "autonomous community...established before the emergence of law and the State" and that the State must respect it as a matter of national survival. It says "Embryonic and foetal life shall be entitled to protection and respect from the moment of conception," and the state should encourage "homely circumstances" for child care. It obliges the media to respect marriage and parenting and assigns parents, rather than the State, primary responsibility for protecting the rights of the child. The law enumerates responsibilities for minors, including respect and care for elderly parents."

"The purpose of the law is "to create a predictable and safe regulatory environment for family protection and the promotion of family welfare, and to enforce the Fundamental Law," the nation's new constitution,...The Fundamental Law nullified Hungary's communist-era constitution..."

Friday Fax: Hungary Defies Critics With New Family Law

Some may see this as extreme. Some as common sense. But, it is interesting that this law is replacing the Communist laws! In which direction is our own country headed???

Unlike W. Europe, these countries experienced the horrors of socialism and aren't so quick to re-adopt aspects of it.

I somehow think that his has more to do with the fact that Hungary seems to be more religious as a country than the US is...

Now people from the US who are very rigid can move there and have their needs met for a "man and woman only" marriage.

I wonder what they'll do with people who can't or won't procreate?
Hmmmm.

Not so sure on that. My mother growing up and working in Budapest was actually scolded by her boss for attending church and was threatened with termination if she was seen going to service again. IIRC, the jist of it was: "The government is here to provide all you need, a job, a living...why go to church?". Also:

and Hungary soon became one of the world's leading manufacturers of pornography.
I think this has more to do with acting out of desperation for a decaying moral compass caused by 40 years of poverty caused by socialism and a sort of cluelessness on how to break their chains after 1989, as transitioning too quickly to a pure free market system brought corruption and underground criminal activity.

This law means more back alley abortions and sham "marriages".

It seems a country that lived so many years under the horrors of communism wouldn't be so fast to allow the government to control so much of their basic lives.

With freedom comes responsibility. I think what they are saying is that the state is not taking responsibility for raising families, like in Sweden where women can raise children without a man's help just as easily as with his help, just by making the State their sugar daddy.

In addition, since Hungary is beyond broke, it makes perfect sense to make it perfectly clear that the highly generous maternity leave they offer comes with a price.

Would you be willing to surrender the State's 2 year paid maternity leave law in order to allow for easier abortions and a less family centered constitution? Pick one of the two.
