They just came out with a survey that showed the 10 "richest" states (by ave. family income) and the 10 "Poorest"

http://finance.yahoo.com/real-estate/article/103432/The-Richest-(and-Poorest)-Places-in-the-U.S.?mod=oneclick (broken link)

8 of the ten "richest" are solidly Blue states (Alaska and Virginia are the exceptions) and all 10 of the "poorest" states are solidly Red.

I guess there are several "they are out of touch" ways to take this (please chime in with yours), but my take is that all those "upper income tax-cuts" pushed through by Bush and the former Republican Congress were not exactly aimed at the "base" of voters (campaign contributors, maybe).

The 10 poorest states

The states with the lowest median household income

State Income
Montana $40,627
Tennessee $40,315
Kentucky $39,372
Louisiana $39,337
Alabama $38,783
Oklahoma $38,770
Arkansas $36,599
West Virginia $35,059
Mississippi $34,473

Top 10 wealthiest states

Here's where the median household income is highest

State Income
Maryland $65,144
New Jersey $64,470
Connecticut $63,422
Hawaii $61,160
Massachusetts $59,963
New Hampshire $59,683
Alaska $59,393
California $56,645
Virginia $56,277
Minnesota $54,023

Those numbers are misleading. If you take what it costs to live in the so called “poor” states and what it costs in the “rich” states for the most part you could reverse the labels.
Do you really think you would be “considered rich” in Hawaii if you made $61k? $56k in CA wouldn’t get you a slum apartment.
On the other hand $39k in Kentucky you could have a nice 4br house in a nice new neighborhood. Same goes for the rest of the states. Some better some less so, but none of them would be considered poor.

Yes, In Tennessee you can have a nice 4/4 for 300 or 400k with a pool. But your salary in five years may stay the same, and if you are a professional person, will probably have to relocate again. It evens out.

Higher cost of living and salary, plus culture and activities = city

slower laid back lifestyle and cheaper housing= country

That was a very poor use of statistics. Westchester County NY has the Clintons and used to have the Rockefellers. Yet there were certainly folks there who were dirt poor. Does each of the states mentioned only have one political party? Highly misleading results.

In 2004 it was proven that the majority of the most charitable states are the red states from the poorer states.

They make less money and give more of it away than the blue states.

AmericanLib, It was said that back during Vietnam that a disproportionate number of the soldiers (grunts) were from either poor areas of the country and generally much more often from the south. Despite the fact we have a volunteer army today, it seems that the south is where the greatest number of soldiers are recruited from. ( I only wish I had the median household incomes to look at)

Had nothing to do with who was more compassionate or charitable, my apologies for not making it more clear.
