Che wasn't the poster child for anything but violent revolution. He's not someone anybody should idolize.
However, most of those who were buying and wearing Che T-shirts don't know anything about him. It's just cool to wear that shirt, just as it was back in the 60's and 70's.
Never forget that in any mass protest movement which includes a lot of young people, ignorance is rampant and a great many of them are just there to get laid. It was the same back during the 60's. Protests are more of a social event than anything else and it's dangerous to read too much into it.
Whatever his foibles or his politics, the man believed in something and stood up for it. He traveled around the world and put his neck on the line to fight against things he perceived as an injustice. Whether or not he was right or wrong isn't my call.
I think the truth about him lies somewhere in between the extreme opinions that people have about him.
I know who Che really was. I know that he was one of the world's worst murderers of all time.
If you think Che was one of the worst of all time, you don't know history.
Off the top of my head I can think of 3 worse during your lifetime.
