US intelligence officials offer grim words on Afghanistan - News - Stripes

WASHINGTON — Senior U.S. intelligence officials offered a bleak view of the war in Afghanistan in testimony to Congress on Thursday, an assessment they acknowledged was more pessimistic than that of the military commanders in charge.

Looks like we're not doing so well in Afghanistan (shock).
I'd say that we should get the heck out.

The comments are rather interesting.

It's clear as day what is being said here. I'll interpret for you:

"Barack Obama faces a very tough re-election year, and by most accounts he has abandoned his base constituency by failing to fulfill his foreign policy campaign promises. He has also not only continued, but fortified the Bush Terror Apparatus at the disgust of his supporters. Since the President needs to be re-elected, we are here today to provide the impetus for Mr. Obama to go before the country and declare that the mission in Afghanistan is a lost cause and that he will expedite the return of American troops. The election of 2012 hinges on the recapture of his core constituency in this regard. Thank you."

Interesting, but not much of a surprise to anyone who's followed the war.

Yep. Too bad Bush et al didn't know anything about history or we wouldn't be where we are now.

Didn't people say the same about Iraq about 4-5 years ago?

Yes, they did. They said that after we leave, the Shia would stick it to the Sunni and that Iran would end up dominating Iraq.

So, how's it going there now?

Other countries involved in Afghanistan while the U.S. went into Iraq were privvy to the ROE's that hampered any long term success's.

When your troops are ordered to ignore poppy fields and even ignore the guy standing in a doorway that you were positive had taken pot shots at your vehicles on the way into a village because you hadn't got clearance to engage from the local chieftan, when you know the head dude Karzai and his now dead brother were/are reviled by the bulk of the citizens and are squirrelling millions into foreign accounts, when you know the local warlords are simply waiting you out to then go back to actively supporting the Taliban after yur exit, when you know all of these things have been there for the last decade and will remain unchanged after you spend lives and money - WHY WASTE EITHER????

How about the ten million $$ of American taxpayer money that is being flown out of the Kabul airport as cash in suitcases every week by the corrupt politicians there? And Congress, knowing this is happening, is still giving them the money to continue this.
