Sorta.
Let's recall, first of all, that very few 18-wheelers run on gasoline, they run on diesel fuel, which is more akin to jet fuel and heating oil. Nevertheless, conversion of our heavy-trucking fleet to LNG would allow the refiners to fine tune their output more toward gasoline.
However, it might also reverse the current trend of taking the longer and heavier truck hauls off the highways in favor of intermodal rail-based service -- what the previous generation used to call "piggyback" traffic.
And while we're dealing with the railroads, let's not fogret that electrifying 40-60,000 miles of rail mainline could save a whole lotta diesel fuel. The major freight railroads (we're down to seven in English-speaking North America, and two of those are Canadian) are reluctant to do this because of the heavy capital costs, the long depreciation period, and the constant threat of nationalization (either direct or
de facto via re-regulaton).
And finally, I believe that the contradictory trends toward smaller autos and larger trucks, with the potential for more serious accidents, might one day lead to a grass-roots call (along the lines of the MADD campaign) for re-introduction of stronger, more-restrictive size and weight limits for the trucking industry.
This scenario is going to be very interesting to watch as it plays out.
