Sorta.

Let's recall, first of all, that very few 18-wheelers run on gasoline, they run on diesel fuel, which is more akin to jet fuel and heating oil. Nevertheless, conversion of our heavy-trucking fleet to LNG would allow the refiners to fine tune their output more toward gasoline.

However, it might also reverse the current trend of taking the longer and heavier truck hauls off the highways in favor of intermodal rail-based service -- what the previous generation used to call "piggyback" traffic.

And while we're dealing with the railroads, let's not fogret that electrifying 40-60,000 miles of rail mainline could save a whole lotta diesel fuel. The major freight railroads (we're down to seven in English-speaking North America, and two of those are Canadian) are reluctant to do this because of the heavy capital costs, the long depreciation period, and the constant threat of nationalization (either direct or de facto via re-regulaton).

And finally, I believe that the contradictory trends toward smaller autos and larger trucks, with the potential for more serious accidents, might one day lead to a grass-roots call (along the lines of the MADD campaign) for re-introduction of stronger, more-restrictive size and weight limits for the trucking industry.

This scenario is going to be very interesting to watch as it plays out.

But that was the whole point of his scam; take wind energy subsidies to buy up land for gas exploration and sell the water to municipalities. Surely nobody was dumb enough to think he was actually serious about investing in windmills, right?

That's coming to an end soon enough as well. Northrop's refitting part of their shipyard operations to build offshore construction vessels, and the largest source of renewables funding is coming from the defense dept.

Outstanding comment about the situation.

Last evening Fox News ran a show pushing oil and gas and since one of the hosts was Sarah Palin most of you wouldn't want to see any of it. At any rate people who took part said a lot about how much the price of gasoline is hurting them and their families. One your man said that he attends college in New York state and lives in a contiguous state with much lower prices. He buys enough gasoline to get him across the state line and saves 80 cents per gallon. There is something pretty fishy going on with the amounts of differences between states and it isn't all taxes.

The final statement on the show was that we must control the trading of oil at the point where they trade daily in amounts, usually much larger than what is used here.

Of course, Palin favors drilling in the part of ANWR that has been open for drilling for some time. Of course, she is in favor of building and using the pipe line that Obama is holding off for. If he wants to wait till after the election to say yes that makes me wonder what he has in mind. It sounds too much like what he was talking to the Russian president about the other day. What might he do to us after he wins re-election?
