Michelle Obama launches White House Kitchen Garden book - Telegraph

First lady Michelle Obama made her literary debut Tuesday with a book about the White House garden, an idea born in her Chicago kitchen.

"American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America" is a memoir, how-to, collection of recipes and infomercial for her "Let's Move" anti-obesity campaign.

Now we're cookin' with oil. I mean solar.

I can sense the Nanny urge coming on. She wants to pull a Bloomberg.

Don't do it Michelle. Unless it helps to distract the media from Barack's abysmal economic achievements.

If my library gets this book, I am going to check it out.

People should be encouraged to grow gardens - you'd be surprised what you can grow in just a little space. I started out 16 years ago with an 8' x 8' patch that I dug myself with a pick axe. Every year I made it a little bigger and learned to grow more things. We've since purchased the adjoining property at tax sale (and DH bought me a rototiller), and the gardens have really expanded - not just vegetables, but berry bushes and some fruit trees. Every summer, we have healthy things to eat, freeze, and can, and I now have a lot of surplus to sell. The work outside is also a great way to get tanned and keep fit.

Ha Ha,

I support you. But I'm going to give you some ribbing. And I know first hand.

Don't grow anything in your front yard. Even though you own it, you can't do it.

The Obama's got a side lot in Chicago at a discount price. I couldn't resist saying that.

Government assistance for rototillers? That doesn't surprise me.

If you sell your crop you must report that income to the IRS.

OK, I gave you a little bit of a jab. But, what I said is true.

Nothing beats home grown veggies. Keep it up.

The book seems quite timely and might inspire some to try growing vegetables at home. When I first started growing my own vegetables I was a bit intimidated until I had success. Reading first hand accounts
can inspire people to try something new and I think this book is a positive example.

Food science is a hot topic for study today with new discoveries coming out every month. Freshly picked fruits and vegetables are the healthiest and are the most nutrient dense. The nutritional quality of foods begins declining within a few days after harvest. Proper storage (i.e. refrigeration) prolongs the freshness but once off the plant, the natural enzymes take over and start the degradation process. Michelle Obama's choice of becoming an advocate for home gardening is one of the best projects of a First Lady in many years.

Many cities have farmers' markets during the summer months. Purchasing fresh produce at these markets is a wise decision.

Yeah.

I kinda doubt that I'll be buying Michelle's book - at least not until it's on sale for a discounted price - but the healthier eating move is a good thing.

And hey, maybe her book can get some couch potato Obama fans to start eating healthy, and living healthier lives. That'd be great!

So what is your main complaint:

1. Someone that can write a book
2. People that garden

Hey, maybe the O's can start a garden on that strip of land they 'bought' from Rezko!

What grows in Chicago?
