Before you answer this question, make sure you understand where the government gets and puts its money.

Be careful as the answer may surprise you.

Simple math. The Social Security and Medicare alone would account for 43% of 2011 Federal Budget. How many rich people would use that program?

Secondly, the top 1% earners paid 36% of income tax but how much government services such as Social Security, Medicare and Food Stamps do they use?
Before you post your question, make sure you understand how the programs you cite work.

Rich people collect Social Security, fyi. You're obviously not old enough to know that from experience. Or maybe your parents (or grandparents) never told you they get a gov't check in the mail monthly.

The gov't isn't "rigged" for the rich. The tax cuts for the rich that have been instituted over several administrations, resulting in a top tax rate in the 36%-range, and a lower capital gains tax, favor the rich at the expense of everyone (not just the poor), because the loss in revenue means the gov't doesn't have money for basic infrastructure maintenance (to say nothing of upgrading), results in job loss when federal support to the states shrinks and causes massive layoffs on the state level, which in turn causes further loss of tax revenue (fewer people paying taxes) PLUS a drain on federal monies due to more people needing unemployment benefits, and erodes the middle class, which is the backbone of a stable economy.

That's not "rigging" the entire gov't for the rich. It's a simple issue of tax policy. Tax policies come, tax policies go. This one's got to go.

While you are grousing about all that money our poor ailing seniors get which gives you a whoping check of lets say 20,000 bucks a year which is just above the poverty line. Do remeber that 300-400 billion dollar check Americas 1% get for interest payments on all those trillions of Treasury Bills they own and can buy or sell or borrow against like real money! We spend almost as much on this form of unearned income than on Medicare or Medicaid!

It certainly is not rigged to help the poor get out of poverty.

FWIW - From another thread -the Morgan Bank may fail as the derivatives market collapses. I doubt if the government can insure this mess.

Most of that money that goes to the poor ends right back up in the hands of the rich. Furthermore, the policies in place by our fascist government subsidize the poor, like illegal immigrants in order to keep the supply of cheap labor high and subsequently the demand for labor low, which puts downward pressure on wages, that the rest of American's have to pay for.

The same goes with the foreign and domestic trade policies that benefit these parasites at the top.

They all depend on Big Government to keep their ponzi scheme going.
I'll bet you support Big Government too!

Where is the risk when you have your cronies in the government writing rules and regulations to benefit your industry? Where is the responsibility in firms like Goldman Sachs that have had hundreds of people circulating in and out of government to help the parasites on Wall Street?

Where is the risk involved when you come along as a CEO and wipe out a company you did not start with your blood, sweat and tears in the beginning only to destroy the company and the workers so that you can extract more wealth for the parasites on Wall Street and your Boardroom buddies?

The government is rigged to the rich. Yes they have social programs but those exist only to allow the masses a meager existence and prevent open political revolt as we now see going on in other parts of the world including some European nations. The biggest largess goes to the top 5%.

Think of it this way - during the financial crisis in September of 2008, when it became clear that the very wealthy CEOs and top executives of financial firms might be at risk of losing their money, the federal government tripped all over itself to give them unrestricted funds - those funds were barely regulated at all, and helped to finance their salaries, bonuses, and the capital gains of many "counterparties" whose bets were "made whole" by the government's intervention.

Now, compare that with the average bailout given to a lower-income homeowner facing foreclosure - on average, there isn't one.

Draw your own conclusions.
