Karyn, interesting post. I've noticed most educated young people (all colors) head for the hip urban neighborhoods where there aren't any children. Or, they hit the burbs usually with a roommate in tow. There's nothing wrong with that at all.
I would rather live in Appalachia than anywhere in Baltmore City, including the white neighborhoods. I guess that is because you don't see many news reports of violent crime coming from Appalachia. However, I would rather live in a nice middle class white neighborhood in suburbia, than in a white Appalachian neighborhood, too. It's all relative isn't it?
I grew up in an area where I didn't even know black people existed. I, therefore had no opinion of racial issues, back then. After living to where I am close to retirement, having seen all the racial strife in the news, especially the double standard reporting White on Black, Black on White, etc crimes, I start longing to a return to my youth, by moving to an area that is more homgenous for my retirement. Not so much to be away from minorities, but to avoid hearing the daily reports of murders on the news. I want to live in an area where breaking and entering becomes topic number one for discussion. This toolState and County QuickFacts) will be most helpful in finding that place.
Sometimes I feel like I'm wrong for not wanting to live in a minority community, since after all, I am African American.
I have a problem with the question as posed. Is your problem with living in a "minority" neighborhood or is your problem living in a neighborhood that is not indicative of your class status? They are two different issues because I can assure you that I can point to all white communities that no one in their right mind would want to live in and predominately "minority" communities that most folks would love to afford to live in.

However, in my present community, in NOVA, I see a lot of fathers with their children.
When the family unit is not intact, communities become infested with gangs, because the children/young adults are looking for a father figure and/or peer acceptance. Since however minority areas tend to lack positive male role models, the neighborhoods become drug and gang infested, which breeds crime, poverty, etc. It just seems like a never ending cycle and I don't want to live in a community that deals with those issues.
Oh, there it is. The single mom welfare queen stereotype. Right on time.
Trash of any color is more mobile these days. While it might be very convenient for the state to build mass transit so you can commute from your suburban home to the job in the inner city, it is also easier for the inner city scum to travel out to your suburban area to commit their property crimes.
I don't believe the problem is related to race like I said, but mostly values.
I used to live in an apartment complex in Minnesota that was 90% White, I felt totally safe and never had any problems.
A few Black families moved in and now the place is at least 30% African American. My ex girlfriend still lives there and she is ready to move out
The dynamics of the place changed dramatically, her stuff got stolen from a common area as she was moving from one apartment to another. The amount of noise and disturbance went up dramatically and cops now show up at the complex at least twice a week( totally unheard of, before)
So, I totally understand white flight, who the hell wants to live around people who do not share our same values?
When was this? Was this subsidized by our so-called govt?

...or bag your groceries, feed you obnoxious children at McDonalds, mow your lawns and wipe your elderly mother's ass in the nursing home.
