Activist churches bait IRS, but agency won't bite so far - Bottom Line

It's shocking and sad how much municipal governments suffer because churches refuse to pay taxes.

They'd have to investigate the black churches, which are uber political.

I agree with you....I don't think churches should be exempt from paying taxes.

They are an active and beneficial entity within a community though. They do good work for the most part.

The day has arrived that I just about agree with Sanrene. Wow. I would like to know if you believe that Rev. Wright and Farrakhan do good work for the most part. I do think the consequences of being indoctrinated into a weird superstition where fantasy is taught as fact far outweigh the "benefit" whatever they may be.

Time to tax them all, whether they be left or right leaning.

They do not want to have to then investigate Planned Parenthood and all of the rest of the non profits that are politically active.

This is it right here. Churches enjoy similar protection from taxes as do numerous other non-profits. If you begin taxing churches, you need to tax other non-profits. Planned Parenthood is a fine example because it already receives taxpayer dollars and conducts business that many find highly objectionable.

BTW, if a church opens a "for profit" business (like a bookstore), the profit from that business is taxable.

The cold blooded murdered of the innocent unborn is more than "highly objectionable", it is abominable and as foul a sin as exists.

Municipal governments do not suffer because churches "refuse" to pay income taxes! They suffer most from what they must pay out in benefits to public employee unions.

Unions have been breaking the bank of State and local governments for far too long with ever increasing demands for more benefits, bigger pensions, and higher wages. They earn a large percentage more in total salary and benefits than private sector employees, all paid for by the tax payers.

But unions have billions of dollars. They have budgets for activism, and even for funding violent protests. There is no reason for the taxpayers to be footing the bill for Union employee benefits.

With so much money available, the claim that the Unions were "outspent" in WI is a total lie.

Churches use their money for good. They fund mission trips to foreign countries to assist with needed projects. Our former church made semi-annual trips to Haiti to assist with hospital maintenance, and remodeling including updating wiring.

Churches also help with local outreach projects, and food banks. Their money is not wasted. If they were required to pay income taxes, supporting the black hole that is the money pit of public employee union benefits, they would likely not have the funds to do the work of the church.

Even income from hall rentals can be taxable, depending on what percentage it is of the churches overall income.

In the early years of American History the churches served as the community centers, and were engaged in not only local politics but were often the only source of news and information about what was happening at the State and Federal level as well. Sermons often covered political issues.

It has only been in our more recent History that churches have been intimidated into refraining from taking on political issues. I'm glad to see them taking a stand against this.

I consider it to be one of the responsibilities of the church to keep an eye on our politicians, legislation, etc. and to inform their congregations on issues that concern the church, which includes moral issues.

The recent attempt by this administration to force the churches to provide abortafacients and contraceptives as part of their "health care" plans against their beliefs is a good example of why the church has a right and a duty to be involved.
