As of late last year, bank robbing in NC has become extremely dangerous. Unless you have eyes in the back of your head, watching the teller put money into the bag might be the last thing you see in this life before it all goes black from a bullet to the back of the head by a bank customer.

Nasty thugs better learn to have eyes in the back of their heads as good people are no longer putting up with their BS.

Crime will drop in that area, at least for the short term. But still, the good samaritan shooter has put himself in the spotlight and has to worry about possible lawsuits, revenge from the criminals friends and family plus knowing that he had to shoot somebody. I wouldn't want to be put in that position unless there was no other alternative.

The DA dropped the charges, particularly because he knew he'd be humiliated and possibly lose re-election in an increasingly (R) leaning state. The updated castle doctrine essentially eliminates the possibility of suing when breaking into someone's home. Don't know how that will apply here, but I think the fact that the assembly approved this means that NC doesn't tolerate BS frivolous lawsuits anymore.

While I'm just armchair quarterbacking here, the head wasn't the best place to shoot. If the shot was a double tap to the midsection, he probably would've been dead. With the head shot, the suspect probably dropped immediately so you can't shoot him again to make sure the job is complete.
