Over the last 60 years, which president was most successful at reducing federal spending? Bill Clinton.

Which president has increased federal spending the most? Barack Obama.

And who was #2 in increasing spending? George W. Bush.

Interesting. I think it shows that if you want to figure out who's going to reduce or increase government spending the most, good luck. You can't rely on party labels. They're meaningless.

That would be Federal spending as a percent of GDP. The GDP figures make some difference.

It is not surprising. Clinton being politically savvy, saw the Gingrich revolt, and rode it. Now add to that he was a governor of a southern state, and by nature, they are fiscally prudent. Senators are NOT fiscally prudent, as unlike govs, they can BORROW. Most importantly, BC was a charter member of the DLC, the pro business wing of the Democrats that sadly, the reckless DNC, Obama's wing, has vanquished.

I fully expected ungodly deficits under Obama, and was hoping Hillary would beat him, as no matter who won b/w her and McCain, the deficits would be far,far lower.

May be true, but these are different circumstances.

Under Clinton Greenspan made interest rates near zero for the first time and lots of common people and retired folks out of desperation threw their money into the stock market.
This made all the investors already their take their profits out and pay taxes leaving the regular guys holding the bag.
For a couple of years all the profits made a surplus to the treasury, then the stock market crashed sending most of those smaller investors to welfare and bankruptcy.
The rise and fall of that economy was due to Greenspan who was a jerk. Clinton can take credit for the good, but at the end of his term it was crashing and he needs to take credit for the crash as well if he wants to take credit at all.

Problem was the Greenspan manipulation of the interest rates.

Clinton also did a nice reform in 1997 that got us into the sub-prime mess and the RE bubble.

He also gave the Chinese missile guidance and rocket technology so they could go from hitting nothing to targeting all the United States with nukes. (Thanks Clinton)

He also had Bin Laden several times, once was offered him directly from another country and Clinton refused which lead to thousands dead in 9-11 and a war on terror. (Thanks Clinton again)

Then Clinton had his own personal war against women maybe including his own wife.

Both Clinton and Obama have us in trouble, just different ways of getting us there.

The contract with America came about due to Clinton and that made Clinton do welfare reform (which Obama of course reversed), since dependency is a must for the vote regarding Democrats.

I know you want to cheer for your "team", but if you're going to give credit to the Republican Congress of the 90s for reducing spending, you'll have to blame them for increasing spending during the Bush years.
