Good news for a change, at least for the US.

The U.S. is now staring at an energy future awash with its own crude, with far-reaching consequences for Canada’s oil sands, the U.S. economy and global geopolitics. This massive shift has been sparked by changing political sentiment and technological advances that have allowed crude to be tapped in new places – from North Dakota to Oklahoma, Colorado, Michigan, and even Florida. U.S. boom in oil production spells peril for Canadian crude - The Globe and Mail

But, but, but... Republicans have claimed Obama has DESTROYED the American oil industry. I don't understand how it could be booming if Obama was secretly destroying it. The Republicans wouldn't be deliberately lying to us, would they?

The empty chair obamas' federal regulations has oil and gas production on federal lands.
The current boom is thanks to private and state land drilling were obama has no control.
It takes an average of 307 days to receive a permit to drill on federal lands tate approval usually takes only a few weeks.

The growth in oil and natural gas production is occurring in spite of President Obama, not because of him. Despite the fact that over two trillion barrels of oil resources lie on federal lands, the vast majority of increases in oil and natural gas production are occurring on private and state lands, not the federal lands and federal offshore areas that the federal government controls.

From 2007 to 2011, 96 percent of the increase in oil production occurred on private and state lands. More recently, from 2010 to 2011, oil and natural gas production increased on private and state lands, but decreased on federal lands.

This seems to contradict what you are telling us.... Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar says that if producers were sincere about wanting to increase energy production, they would activate millions of acres of public land already leased to them. What should they be doing on that land? Drilling.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Salazar says the administration wants companies "to develop the tens of millions of acres they've already leased but have left sitting idle." Obama Tells Oil Industry to Drill Idle Leased Land - ABC News

From your link
In a statement, API CEO Jack Gerard says that just because a lease doesn't fit the government's definition of active doesn't mean it's idle. Where a lease truly is idle, the reason often is that the producer must hold off drilling while they wait years to get the necessary government permissions.

Why would they be sitting on profit if there wasn't a reason?

Prices are set globally and there are about 2.5 billion more people consuming gasoline than there were 25 years ago. Supply will never be able to keep up with this level of demand growth. This is something any halfway intelligent analyst has been telling everyone for at least the last decade. It's not going to go down either with billions of 3rd worlders getting their first cars and motorcycles too.
