I've always supported the idea of giving tax breaks to gun owners. This would reward people who are performing their civic duty (owning a gun) and encourage more citizens to do the same. This would also lower crime, as more law-abiding citizens would own guns. Needless to say, this would have to be done in such a way that the government would prevent the government from using the tax breaks to determine who does and doesn't own a gun, as to not violate our freedom and privacy.

I'd support a repeal of the excise tax on firearms (FAET) so that the average American pays no more than the LEO purchasing a personal firearm (not for duty carry).

I'd support a repeal of the 1934 NFA taxes - at $200 a pop to transfer, those taxes on Title II firearms do add up.

Owning a gun is not a civic duty

It's a right. But not a duty.

Rights are things we are guaranteed to be able to do without intereference, they are not duties. It's called the Bill of Rights, not the Bill of Duties.

I'm pro gun (though not pro-assault weapon), but to call it a "civic duty" to own a gun is laughable.

And Tax breaks? Really? If anything, there should be a bullet tax for all those people who are buying up the ammo stock and building their personal arsenals.

This is one of the dumbest ideas ever. Owning a gun is not a civic duty or civic anything else. People buy and own guns for themselves, not out of any civic responsibility or anything

You know what the rightwing would say if Obama ever came out with this idea? They'd point out that to get the tax break you'd have to show that you own a gun and they'd claim that it's really just a sneaky way of finding out who owns the guns so they'll know where to look when they come to take the guns away

Actually not a bad idea. How many convicted felons do you think would be dumb enough to try and get that tax break? I'm guessing thousands easy.
