But have them pay their taxes to the government, who fights for their rights, as the rest of us do!

Quote:
Pulpit Freedom Sunday is an organized protest to end that. It is about protecting the inherent right of America’s clergy to choose and deliver the content of their sermons without fearing the IRS will investigate or punish the church because of something a pastor says from the pulpit.
Quote:
The IRS says churches and religious groups, to be eligible for tax-exempt status, are “absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office.” It doesn’t matter whether a church’s leadership is liberal or conservative, left or right.

I think the actual church and/or school property should be tax exempt. Everything else should be taxed. Especially if they involve themselves in politics.

We have a house in our very small community that is a parsonage. We have a utility district we each pay into to pay off the bonds about 1200 dollars a year. The parsonage is exempt. They use the water and sewage just like the rest of us. Why should they get a free ride?

When we lived in Missouri, churches owned a great deal of property that was off the tax rolls. The cites just put a tax on big utility users. There are was to get around tax exemption.

Agreed-----the same year that ALL Democratic good-for-nothings pay their federal taxes. That includes your perpetual welfare clients as well as the loud-mouthed millionaires that claim the rich "need to pay their fair share", but won't fork it over when you challenge them with a 1040.

So, people's money, that has already been taxed, should be taxed again because they speak their mind? A minister's income is taxed and that is all that should be taxed. Do you not realize that churches and their money do a huge amount of charity for this country? You may not agree with religion, but I would hope you would see how much good they do for communities using that money that you want taxed. Taxed for what? So that obama can throw that money on things like Solyndra or GM that shipped jobs over seas. Leave their charity work alone.

No the churches profits should be taxed. That is normally the way the tax code works. Revenue - expense equal profits. If a Church does not make a profit, no tax. Churches are businesses plane and simple. There profits should be taxed.

They are non-profit organizations. You may not like them, but there are non-profit oraganizations that I don't like. If you are for this, are you for EVERY non-profit organization to be taxed too? That opens up a whole new can of worms.

Any church can voluntarily give up their tax exempt status any time they like. It's not mandatory. Then, the preacher can be as political as he likes without "fear" of the IRS.

Hmmmmm. I guess they're not concerned enough about about their "principles" to give up that gift from Uncle Sugar, huh?

And property taxes are assessed and collected whether there's a profit or not.

Sure but while your at it include the left wing non-profit groups such as SPLC etc. I am all for taxing churches that use thier platform for political purposes. Like those that provide sanctuary to illegals.
Non profit groups that commit voter fraud by regestering mickey mouse etc.
