How long should a refugee status be held? 700,000 Arab Palestinians left Israel willingly between 1948-1949 and they and their families can still be maintain refugee status. On the other hand 800,000 Jews left Arab countries after the establishment of Israel in 1948, why don't they still have refugee status? Discuss.
Chava, of course you have a point. It sheds light on a different issue as well: most Israel's haters live under the impression that only Europeans immigrated to Israel, portraying it as extension of European colonialism, when in fact about 50% originate from Arab/ Islamic countries. However, unlike the Jewish refugees, Palestinians had the misfortune of not being absorbed in neighboring countries. A whole civilian population payed a price that nobody (including Israel's leaders) envisioned. On a different note, I see Iran going forward as a nation, with or without Ayatollahs. Same with Syria, Libya and Egypt. Israel is capable of defending itself, regardless of Obama's political stand. (Israel will need to learn how to survive even with more Arab countries developing nuclear weapons in the coming years).
I think its time to take a break from these controversies. Arabs were bashed enough and more tensions won't not help either side. Its time to calm things down. Christians, Jews and Muslims will still need to coexist, even after a potential (military) confrontation. Neither will vanish in thin air (although many people hope so).

It should have been the first generation only. Thus the youngest refugee would now be 64. But as the US enters elections, Israel entering elections, Abbas wanting to step down and the US cutting funding to the UN. How about we table this topic until 2013?
