As Bob Dylan said a few weeks ago: Americans are at each others throats when it comes to race.

BOTH blacks and whites have a role to play in this. It's not one group, it's both.

I figure it is something subconsciously hardwired.

I think it might have something to do with the mere exposure effect.

In other words people stick to their own kind. Not always.

What do I know though, people much smarter than I likely have some very thoughtful theories on it.

Because the Democrats love to use the race as a wedge issue.

Institutionalized racism will always create a barrior to solving race issues. You can't on one hand say racism is bad then on the other use the state to enforce laws or policies that discriminate based on race.

Racism will always be an issue in this country as long as we have Republicans and conservatives.

My middle class suburban community doesn't have any race issues, there is about 20% minority population and they blend in seamlessly with the rest. Races do not self-segregate into zones of blocks as they do in more urban areas. My stepson's last birthday party had 4 different races represented and the kids are not even aware that they are of different races. There is not a clash of cultures as only 1 culture exists. Its when groups start living among their own exclusively with their own distinct cultures that race problems arise.

BTW my zipcode is almost exclusively republican/conservative, and always has been.

It's because certain types of racism is accepted and even encouraged. There is a thread here showing this. The thread is about removing government support for groups that discriminate.

But when one asks those who believe that the government should not support groups that discriminate if they should still support the Congressional Black Caucus, well, then, that's all of a sudden an O.K. use of government dollars.

Discrimination is discrimination, period. Until we decide discrimination is not something we will support then there will always be discrimination.

Give an example of institutionalized racism in place today. I'm not aware of any.

From my position, up here, north of the 49th paralell, it would seem that many Americans of whatever race, have a vested interest in NOT solving the problem.

I'm talking about those individuals and organisations that make a living from racial unrest, such as the NAACP, and the Black Panthers and the Black Muslims. And don't forget the Nation Of Islam, either.

Here in Canada, it is a very rare thing to have any one attempt to "play the race card " in connection with getting a job, or being admitted to a University. Imagine a country where getting a scholarship is actually based on "Scholarship " not race ? And the best "person for the job " actually gets the job ?

Of course, we also don't have the long and sordid history of racial animosity that the USA has, nor do we have the millions of dis-advantaged citizens who get second rate education and miserable living conditions, related to their racial identity.

Wiser men than I have agonized over this problem, for decades, I don't see it getting any better, any time soon. The powder keg fuse is just a few inches from the flame that is threatening to explode, again.

I'm old enough to remember standing in Windsor, Ontario in the summer of 1968, watching Detroit burn, just across the river, and listening to the sound of 50 caliber machine guns being fired by the Michigan National Guard troops.
