Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, prime-minister of Iceland is openly gay and married to another woman. I really doubt that something like this would happen in the USA anytime soon.
It seems like in order for someone to be the president of the United States, you need to be straight, married and Christian, even if it is all BS In some ways, we are like hundreds of years behind others "civilized" countries.

I thought it is currently happening in a "Down Low" kind of way now. You never know.

Isn't/Wasn't one of the Prime Ministers in Australia a lesbian? And of course, New Zealand is the only country on Earth (afaik) where women have held every top government position at the same time.
Quite frankly, with the exception of some of the Asian countries, I can't think of a single 1st world country who is as backwards as the United States. The rest of the civilized world does not care about condemning gays, or spending ridiculous amounts of money and energy fighting same-sex marriage.
It's quite clearly for one reason and one alone. America has a very large uneducated, religious conservative population. We invented Christian Fundamentalism and it's holding us back.

I know. The bigotry, homophobia, and hatred shown by the religious right in this country that would prevent a talented women like this from being elected President is absolutely disgusting.
I'm a republican and I'm very happy to see her. I don't understand why those on my side of the political aisle claim to advocate limited government yet presume to tell people who they can marry. Any real republican that practices what they preach should be happy to see this
