I always forget about the Central African Republic - I tend to think of it as an "impersonal and detached" name - but then what is the United States of America - if you only look at the name?

That might be an interesting study for a sociology graduate - how does the emotional impact of ones attachment to their country of origin impact their perception of an otherwise "clinical" name?

If someone does this study for a thesis or dissertation - please credit me!

The ultimate "impersonal and detached" country name was "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics," which contains no geographical cues at all ("Soviet" simply means "committee" in Russian). Even "United Kingdom" does mention its home islands in the full name, which of course is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."
