It aggrevates me when folks bash the rebel flags true history. MOST slaves had the flag. ON top of that most slaves were WHITE. Slave owners were black. Folks really need to learn there true history before bashing such a awesome piece of southern history.

You know, I really don't give a crap about glorifying the Civil War. Yes, the Confederacy fought valiantly under Robert E. Lee, blah blah blahbity blah. But if you actually read the secession charters of the various southern states, slavery was indeed the defining issue, and no amount of revisionist history will really change that. Oh, sure, you'll find the occasional black slave owner or you'll find black troops wearing Confederate uniforms, but those are the very rare exceptions to what was a morally wrong economic system.

What's more, because of our idiotic and lemminglike crusade to preserve the prerogatives of a very few landowners, the South was economically and socially destroyed for generations. The per capita wealth of Alabama in 1860 made it the third wealthiest state in the country. The Civil War was so catastrophic that only in the past decade or so have we managed to hoist ourselves back off the economic bottom of this country.

So to hell with the Civil War. It was fought for a stupid, immoral cause that ruined the South for generations. And just because our men fought valiantly at Chancellorsville, et al, really doesn't mean that we covered ourselves in glory in any other way.

There's plenty of threads on C-D about the rebel flag, nothing good ever comes out of them.

You seriously need to do some research and perhaps go take a couple of American History courses.

At best, this needs to be moved to politics and other controversies. It doesn't belong here or in history (which it is not).

Here is a big hint. Matthew Brady had photographers that documented war casualties in 3D. There was no way to digitally manipulate images, and with 3D from that era, it is effectively impossible to fake stuff. The war casualties from battles were white. (The Battle of the Wilderness stereoviews in particular are pretty graphic)

Tdog, here's another truth. Right or wrong, the Confederate flag is associated with hatred and racism by many people. Nothing you or anyone else says will change that.

Symbols don't magically *mean* something because you, or a book, or anyone says they mean something. They mean something because people feel they mean something. That's it.

If the gesture of waving means hello to you, it means hello to you. It may mean hello to most people, but if suddenly the culture climate changes where the gesture of waving later means something obscene to a great number of people, like it or not, that's the way it is. You can say you mean hello until you're blue in the face, you can have all the justification and history of the waving gesture behind you that you want, but if a great number of people have decided it means something obscene, and you continue to wave at them anyways out of self-righteousness or stubbornness or whatever, then your choice to wave at will be offensive to them.

So, do you choose to wave your flag? Fine. But the consequences won't change.

A swastika may have spiritual meaning to a Hindu, but that doesn't mean displaying one is going to get sympathetic reactions.

To each their own, I suppose. But generally it's wiser to live in the world as it exists and not as you'd like it to be.

the rebel flag is mostly about showing pride in being from the south. Who cares if black people don't like it. last time i checked most blacks don't like nonblack music, nonblack sports, and voting against anyone whose black either.

This has got to be up there on the top ignorant comments list.

To all other posters on this useless rant of a thread with the exception of the OP, +1.

Pride in what? Seriously. That some distant ancestor of yours decided to go to war in order to keep slavery? And that they ruined an entire region of the country for over a century because of it? What exactly is there to be proud of about the entire Civil War?
