This is kinda piggybacking off of the thread about the use of the term "White Trash."

It seems to me as a black man that poor white people are frowned upon more than the poor of other races. And truthfully, it seems as if middle class and wealthy whites are far more cruel to poor whites than non-whites are. If this is true, why is that?

As poor as many blacks (and other minorities are), in my 47 years, the poorest people i've ever seen in America have been white. It's a story that rarely gets reported in the media, and Americans for some strange reason don't associate poverty with white people.

But in any case, i wonder if people agree with me.

I agree with you that "white trash" seem to take a beating from every angle.

Default Denigrating poor

I think poor people are considered a threat to the "sucessful" regardless of their color or ethnic background. If anything just look at the word denigrating. It means at it core "to make like black".

No not in my experience. However in the media(all not just news) people of color are an unofficial protected class in this day and age.

I think there was a similar thread here a while back. I agree. I think they are blamed 100% for their poverty, while others are given a pass because many people believe that minorities have historically been at a disadvantage. However, I think that poor whites (and I don't mean temporarily poor - I mean the kind of poor that carries on for generations) face the same issues as poor blacks which is usually related to eduaction and upbringing.

LOL...you know, i never realized that, but if you break down the word, it makes perfect sense. Now i'll always look at the word much differently and be more judicious in its use.

I agree that poor people are looked at as a threat, but i'm bothered that people are so scornful of poor people. I've also noticed that although i'll never accuse black folks of treating each other well (we don't), we're generally more empathetic to the poor of our own race. Whether or not we have empathy for the poor of other races the way we do for our fellow blacks is another issue. I know i do personally, but i can't really speak for the others. But i've even heard blacks that weren't all that high up on the totem pole themselves say some less than flattering things about poor whites.

There are poor white people? Who Knew!

From what I've been reading on C-D, they simply don't exist.

Yea, i don't like this idea that being a poor minority is noble. There is a way to be poor AND noble at the same time, but it's not some automatic status that should be granted to minorities.

This^^^.

Still though, i'm shocked that wealthy and middle class whites aren't more sympathetic to poor whites.

I'm also bothered that poverty is in no way associated with white people when so many whites are shockingly poor. That's what i can't understand.
