Having a potluck dinner is trying to destroy an American tradition ? Wow. I never knew American traditions were so weak you would feel so threatened by one tiny group simply trying to raise a valid point about American History.
I love Thanksgiving ( even though I am an evil Leftie ) but I am not sure why anyone should be denied their rights to hold a potluck dinner of their own. And yes Thanksgiving might have rather negative and painful connonations for Native Americans. Not that much for them to celebrate.
"Discussing Thanksgiving from a Native American perspective", I can see how that would have anyone quaking in their boots, with self righteous rage and terror in their hearts that Thanksgiving is about to disappear snatched from your clenched little claws by evil mobs of left wing evil-doers hell-bent on the destruction of America....
How do you know the Native American Students are lefties anyway? Does anyone who deviate from the OP's narrow minded view of the world have to be a leftie ?
I thought have pride in your own race and heritage and history is what all right wings are about. Or is it only your own race, heritage and history which matter ?
I hope this paranoid hysteria from the OP is not catching, plenty enough disturbing rants without adding more fuel to the fire.
You do have to look at the history of Thanksgiving becoming a national holiday, to know more truth, than you do in this thread.
Lincoln, proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens", to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.
Roosevelt, thought an earlier Thanksgiving would give merchants a longer period to sell goods before Christmas.
Thanksgiving is seen by some as a celebration of the conquest and genocide of Native Americans, by European colonists.
Some atheist and strict separationists have also criticized popular traditions associated with the celebration of Thanksgiving, particularly the annual recitation of Thanksgiving proclamations by the President of the United States as they often revolve around the theme of giving thanks to God, due to their interpretation of the separation of church & state. Out of concern for the separation of church and state, presidents Jefferson and Jackson had refused to issue such proclamations.
The left or the right or the middle don't need to do anything to destroy the tradition that was Thanksgiving, America has already done that for itself. Before we would travel to visit with our friends and family, catch up on the events of the year, have a great meal all sitting down together, and give thanks to God for the bounty he had given us.
Now everyone eats in front of the TV watching football, drinks beer, and argues with their families. The tradition is dead already, so everyone can stop fighting over it.

The Government has turned it into a capitalist holiday, to spur economic stimulus.
The Government commercialized it, to profit from.

not in my home and certainly not for my family, extended family, and friends. We live by a different set of values, regardless of the left or right! I have to believe we are happily in the middle and plan on remaining here.
Think about it..get rid of Thanksgiving and Black Friday goes down the tubes with it.
