Long Island Power Authority - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LIPA Hurricane Sandy Response Angers Residents As Many Remain Without Power?

We all know the damage Sandy did. But the lack of preparation and antiquated Government run utilities have made matters worse.

They were not there when people needed them most. The population pays for the services and yes on a calm summer day when we need some air conditioning the utility for the most part provides. But when the time came to help people regain power after a storm they failed miserably.
This is how trust is lost in Government run operations.

As of today 99% have power back on Long Island but do you really think 15 days without the ability to restore power is acceptable in a civilized society?

Do you not understand the sheer amount of work that was needed to get that far? The number of crews in the area, people who were drawn from all over the US and Canada?

Holey moley.

They can't restore service until the wiring has been checked and certified.
It's been harmed by salt-water.

You want to start fires.

What maroons people can be; critical thinking - it's not for everyone (apparently).
Pssst. I live in Europe and I've heard the answer on the news here.

I'm sorry LIPA's response and lack of preparation has been an absolute disaster. If you lived in the area you would agree. 15 days without power is unconscionable. There are still many people without power as well.

Very few areas in Long Island have this issue. Only a couple of towns as a matter of fact. The wiring of my apartment did not need to be checked before power was restored. This is the case with most of those on Long Island. Lower Manhattan had power much faster than those in Long Island(even those inland),and they were among those who received the worst of the storm.

Do they have the money to basically repave Long Island ?

It's cost prohibitive to go back and retro all that line.

Obviously he/she does not. Just an excuse to praise the private sector and bash government agencies. Too bad the OP did not have the foresight to google Con Edison before posting.

OP...Con Edison is not government owned and operated. .

I didn't know LIPA is government owned.

Well, that should be a lesson learned.

And here comes health care...............

Stupid, stupid America. Depending on the government.

Elections have consequences.

The truth is that stuff wasn't built in one day, nor can it be rebuilt in one day. Or ten. Or twenty.

15 days without power is not surprising.
Victims of hurricanes often are not reconnected for much longer.
It's not as simple as connecting wires and throwing a switch... unless you do not mind house fires breaking out.
