I know it does in practice because the Republicans filibuster everything. But isn't the way it works is that it takes 60 votes to break the filibuster and then you vote on passing the bill and it then requires only 51 votes? I saw a clip on TV of the Senate voting, I think on the debt limit, and at the end the Chair declared that the "60 vote treshold has been met" and "the bill is past"

If the vote was to break a filibuster then wouldn't they have to take another vote for the bill itself? And if the vote was for the bill itself then wouldn't it have required only 51 votes? Or 50 really cause Biden would break the tie and he

Bills need only 51 votes if no one filibusters a bill. Talking about a 60 vote threshold is assuming 100% of all bills waiting to be voted on will be filibustered

I would say that you don't know had badly the Gang of 14 screwed up when Bush was there and the GOP was wanting to use what the Dems called the Nuclear Option. Had the Senate done away with this stupid rule that Harry Reid used the same way the GOP is doing now the rule would have been done. Yes, I think there is a chance the Dems better back off because there may come a time when they need the rule again as they did then. What do you know about the nuclear option and the Gang of 14?

It wasn't the Democrats that called it the Nuclear Option it was the Republicans. The Nuclear Option was also the Republicans idea. It never passed

Whatever party is in the majority always talks about doing away with the filibuster. Do you know that constantly assuming other posters on this board know nothing about history is really annoying?

First off it was the GOP that coined the term the Nuclear Option. Secondly, the GOP is not doing what the Dems did during the Bush years, they are doing FAR FAR more of it. The filibusters that occurred during the Bush years when the GOP had the majority in the Senate were at similar levels that the filibusters were at for the prior 10-15 years. The GOP has had FAR more filibusters over the last few years than the Dems did, its not even remotely close.
