Being an American is racist now. We are not to have pride in our own country. The communists have envaded America, and the youth are falling for it hook, line, and sinker. Oh and Are there non-white, non-hetero, non-males in the class? If so, then I would hope the professor is being intellectually honest and defining the same boundaries for the black, gay, and female class members.
Um, students are not asked to "disavow" their white, male, middleclassness, heterosexuality.
From the article: "Research and Analysis, goes on to ask students “to write and speak in a way that does not assume American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status, etc. to be the norm.”
They're asked to attempt to set it aside to attempt to write in and understand the perspective of those who are NOT what is considered the norm in the country, and to not assume everyone shares their perspective.
Any who is part of any majority group will not be acutely aware of differences and the assumptions made every day. When you find yourself any type of minority (this goes for whites who find themselves the minority in a given situation), you suddenly become hyper-aware of how you are different. It's human nature, I think. The only black guy in a class of white guys is going to find himself faced with white perspectives. A white woman in a class of black men will fidn herself confronted with perspectives different than hers on both a sex and race level. The only straight guy who finds himself in a classroom full of gay guys is going to be super aware of his heterosexuality, and will understand why he is able to take his sexuality for granted in every day life, while gay people cannot so easily.
I think it's difficult to ask people to view things in perspectives they are not, and to set aside their cultural biases and assumptions, but it's not the end of the world, and it's not worth getting your panties in a bunch about.
Diversity in America has been reduced from it's original, noble intent of granting access to the American Dream to ensuring that the Lowest Common Denominator™ is guaranteed everything at someone else's expense. Democrats wouldn't have it any other way.
Maleness is bad...men are all angry..they are all violent..they are all aggressive ... they are the cause of all war and oppression of everything and everybody...now if we could only start engineering society by starting with young male children and train them to not be like MEN..to be sort of like little gentle girls...that would solve ALL of the worlds problems...Mentally and emotionally de-ball all males ......Believe it or not there are tons of egg head social engineers that believe this crap....They believe that men can not be noble and kind....that is because those that are trying to revamp the human race are not noble and kind.

If I ask you to think about Thanksgiving from a woman's perspective, does that mean that I think that you are bad, or that your experiences are bad? No, it means that in our society people assume certain roles based on their gender, or based on their ethnicity, or based on their sexuality, or based on their age, or based on any number of factors. And asking you to think about these things from a perspective which is not normally your perspective can be educational. Empathy is not a bad thing.

Why are you leaping the conclusion that the following statement from the article implies that being one or all of the categories combined is a bad thing?
The syllabus of the class, called Political Science 201: Research and Analysis, goes on to ask students “to write and speak in a way that does not assume American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status, etc. to be the norm.”
