Ignoring the issue of whether more gun control is called for (lots of threads existing on that already), what is the possibility that anything will really happen?

I don't see it being structurally possible at this time. And as time goes on, it will be even less so. Why?

- The Republicans control the house, and there's nothing Obama and the Democrats can do to force them to pass a gun control bill. Most of the Republican reps have been elected from districts that have pro-gun majorities, and would get a large blowback from their constituents if they voted for any gun control law. A Democrat from a heavily pro-gun district in WV came out in favor of some sort of "assault weapon" ban, promply got scalped in his district, and immediately backed off. So it would be AT LEAST two years before the Democrats can even try to take back the house, and even then that would likely fail.

- The Republicans in the Senate could filibuster the bill to death. And the Senate is not going to get rid of the filibuster, because the Democrats know what goes around comes around.

- The Second Amendment is getting closer to actually being enforced as conferring a right to individuals. There have now been two big Supreme Court decisions in that direction. There was just recently a circuit court decision that acknowledged a right to carry a gun outside of ones home. This is also likely headed to the Supremes, with the same majority in place that came down with the other decisioins. There may soon be a time when the ability of either the Congress or the state legislatures to impose any sort of gun control will be greatly diminished. Oh, and for those who want to call for repealing the 2nd Amendment, the political realities of that are essentially zero.

So those who want an assault weapon ban, or any other type of gun control to get passed, well, it's not gonna happen.

Actually, I thinks that tbey will push a bill through. Tbey did it once. It is highly possible it will happen by executive order. Mag capcity limits, restricting certain features, etc. Possibly even a call for folks to voluntarily turn in their ARs AKs etc.
That it wont make a dent in violent acts won't matter. Tbe sight of thousands of fine firearms and accesories being turnex to scrap gives the gun hating crowd giddy dreams.
Again, tbat it is a useless act matters not. Tbe rabbit people, quaking in their holes, screaming to be defended by the government, only see the shadow of the hawk pass over them onto someone else. They do not comprehend tbe need, many others have, to not rely on someone else to defend our homes families and persons.
Tbe Obama administration will be only to happy to oblige those fearful, helpless, types, promising tbem safety ic we just trim some fat off tbe Constitution. Capitalizing on fear and outrage over incidents like Newtowne, our right to personal arms will be attacked. Tbose of us who would be armed will be marginalized and labeled as radicals, paving the way for confiscation of our firearms eventually. The opportunity to attack personal arms in tbe wake of tbe recent brutal act of shooting up a school will not be wasted by those who wish us disarmed. Make no mistake, its coming.

When they did it the last time, the Democrats controlled the presidency and both house of congress. They don't now.

I don't mind in this case. I don't blame guns, I blame the person.
