In the Middle East our government kills brown people. I saw a Pakistani child killed by a drone and then watched as the first responders were killed by drones.
I drove through that area and saw the dead bodies of men, women, and children scattered in pieces. I looked at the ones who made it through the carnage and I saw the fear in their eyes and I saw the bewilderment. What were these peoples crime that they should be killed in their own country, by a foreign invader?
Were they terrorists? Were they killers? Or just one of those brown people from the Middle East? Were they scholars? Did they work the land? Were families waiting at home for them?
And who are we to just lie here and do nothing. No matter what they did, our government was the criminal. But we the people did nothing. Just left us wondering, "Why?"
My President says our first task is caring for our children, that is how as a society we will be judged. That there is one thing we can be sure of and that is the love that we have for our children, our families, and for each other.
But we have no love for those in the Middle East. Not when we deny them basic human rights and we kill them time after time after time. They are killed in schools, and they are killed in hospitals.
We pass laws that put sanctions on Iraq which caused the deaths of over 1/2 a million Iraqi children. St Augustine said, "An unjust law in no law at all.' Which means I have a right, even a duty to resist. With violence or civil disobedience. You should pray I choose the latter.
We don't learn, do we.
