Reading through the threads & news post-Sandy Hook, the gun rights advocates seem to have the same anger at criminals who use guns illegally as gun control advocates. So why don't we target how these criminals get their guns?
It feels like the first logical step to take if we're serious about criminals getting guns illegally is to stop that flow at the source., so does anyone know where these guns that criminals are using are coming from?
Obtaining guns illegally is already ... illegal. The problem is that we aren't willing to enforce our law and punish the criminals. The criminals do not fear being caught with a illegal gun - they get a slap on the wrist and out and about.
I would suggest stiff mandatory sentence for:
1. 10 years if the gun is illegally obtained.
2. If a convicted felon is in possession of a firearm, mandatory 25 years.
3. If a felony is committed with a firearm, mandatory life sentence.
With that, no criminal would touch a firearm with a ten foot pole except for those rarities with death wish themselves.

Dream on. You don't understand criminal motivation. Harsher sentences do not deter crime. Would Timothy McVeigh have not killed 200 people if the sentence for murder were more harsh? Would the kids who murdered school kids have not shot them if the sentences were harsher?

There were 74,000 stolen or lost guns in 2008-2010, aprroximately 85% by FFL's. The largest category was "not located in inventory" = 75%, I am sure some of those are illegal sales and they are reporting them lost to cover their liability. That just covers the reported transfers, I would expect the unreported transfers to be also rather large.

No.
Again, as I already stated, you can't stop someone who is willing to die. Most criminals aren't like that - they want to do crime but not time.

And ~10% of those FFLs contribute the guns used in a sizable majority of crimes.

Giving the baiting form of the post, my guess is that OP would want some sort of ban on guns for legal buyers in order to stop them from going downstream to the black market.
The problem is, this is the usual mindless analysis of a problem from big-gov't types. Interdiction strategies generally tend to be ineffective. Look at illegal MJ and cocaine. It all comes from natural plants. Should we therefore 'ban plants,' so to speak. Maybe go out and crop dust all coca & mj growing areas with agent orange?
Well we've actually tried stuff like that. Does anyone know how well it has worked in reducing drug use?
