With six violent deaths per 100,000 people in the United States, by far the highest rate among the world's richest countries, the prevalence of guns—especially unsecured guns—in America is lowering its life expectancy rate, according to a new report by the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine. The report looked at 17 of the world's richest countries, exploring why the United States has the lowest life expectancy for men (75.6) and second-lowest for women (80.7). The results point strongly at America's uniquely widespread gun culture, reports the AP.

We'd have far fewer gun deaths if the U.S. would only outlaw murder. I believe most folks would support such legislation because it would serve as an extremely effective deterrent to homicides of all types, gun-involved or not.

Blah blah blah. More government propoganda. How convenient that this "study" would be released while the levers of government contemplate gun control.

****ing nauseating.

Driving has been driving down our life expectancy, too. While rights are honored, politicians are reminded we are citizens not subjects. Small price to pay to prevent the tipping point into MAJOR life expectancy loss under tyranny or the unrest preventing it. USA #1!!!

It's not guns, it's violence. But thanks for the catchy headline.

Hey you gangbanger, did I state a time frame? People like you are the rote memory learners, where no understanding of context is shown.

Bulldoody.

I'm far more concerned with how smoking, drinking, and junk foods reduce life expectancy.

Alcoholism knocks 33 years off a male's life. And kills several hundred thousand a year.

I think we should outlaw alcohol.

We tried it once before and from what I heard it worked great. No one could become an alcoholic because nobody could get booze.

Dumbass (is it okay to call you that? It appears to be a greeting in your world), in 1990 the violent crime rate was 729.6 per 100,000 while the murder and manslaughter rate was 9.4 per 100,000. In 2009 (the latest year shown on the chart) the violent crime rate was 429.4 and the murder/manslaughter rate was 5.0. During the intervening years, firearms regulations were loosened in many states, and concealed carry permits became easily obtainable in almost every state. Please tell us how guns are driving down the life expectancy of U.S. citizens a little bit more, now that you have some numbers to look at.

Here's the link to the FBI chart that I got the data above from: Table 1 - Crime in the United States 2009

Since hammers and other blunt instruments kill more then guns, maybe we should ban hammers!

In FACT, gun deaths are are one of the LOWEST of ALL categories.
