Why is random drug testing allowed, in jobs where this is not needed.

Say someone smokes a joint in his holiday, then turns up on monday to stack shelves - who cares?

how can you be fired for this since it doesn't affect anyone in the real world?

and how come we could get completely loaded on alcohol but not get fired?

doesn't seem right somehow.

any opinions here?

Simple, really. We're at war with drugs. So smoking a joint is like sleeping with the enemy. And sleeping on the job is usually grounds for getting fired. See?

Don't take a job that tests for illegal drugs. Problem solved.

The solutions are either a) don't use illegal drugs while employed with an employer who may test for the drug or b) if you're going to use illegal drugs, then don't be employed with an employer that tests for illegal drugs.

[with that said - legalize]

But legalization opens up a real can of worms: do you serve the Columbian with the canapes or with desert?

There is no real point but it's probably making someone a whole lot of money by convincing employers otherwise. I'd never be "randomly drug tested" and I don't even use drugs.

It's a matter of power and control. The jobs that least affect public safety, like stocking shelves, those employees are drug-tested.

Surgeons, police officers, air traffic controllers, firemen, members of Congress ---- are any of them ever tested?
