Americans like to leverage debt because the laws in the US make it easier to discharge debt in bankruptcy.
That's the truth.
How many mortgage defaults in Europe? Very hard to default on mortgage in Europe.
The student loan default rate in US is still extremely low despite what u hear in the media. Most US student loan defaults come from vocational schools like beauty school loans and not from 4 year degrees. Why? Cause its hard to discharge student loans.
What about car loans. In Europe u usually need to make 50% downpayment and pay off loan in 2 years.
In USA we have up to 6 year financing for cars with close to zero down. The average cost of new car is $30k.

What's wrong with a trailer? Lots of fine folks use mobile homes as a first step. My grandmother sold her 1200 sq. ft. modular on a 1/2 acre lot for less than 50K and it was nice. 3 BR, 2 ba, large kitchen, and attached site built 2 car garage.

Trailers and condos are still places people live in...
Minimum wage will never be 2 dollars. Even if we didn't have a minimum wage, what is the problem with the market setting the value of the work being contributed?
The problem is the 'race to the bottom' outcome.
The wage will gradually drop and could well hit $2/hr.

Oh but as Americans we can't live like that we're better than those Brits that live in 900 square foot houses attached to each other

Florida like HurricaneKid said, in my state, Virginia, West Virginia, Missouri, need I go on? Do some research first, this is partly why Americans get in debt so much and so easily. Don't buy in a HOA as well.

Minimum wage would be 2 dollars if we let "the market" have its way. Why is having such a low minimum wage such a laudable goal to achieve? This is what I don't understand about extremist logic. Do you want the US to start looking like Mexico and the rest of Latin America, where most people only make enough money equal to the price of a new small car per year? No thanks, you can take that BS south of the border with you, we're not having it here
Because these "things" we think we need are a replacement for human social interaction. Many can't wait to buy the next new screen to stare at while life passes them by.
