TALLAHASSEE -- A state trooper who said he was “cutting a break” to a speeding legislator has been fired because he decided instead to falsely cite the lawmaker for not having proof of car insurance.

Trooper Charles Swindle, a six-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol, is appealing his March 15 firing and says the state highway patrol has an unwritten policy of not issuing tickets to lawmakers who set the patrol’s budget, a charge the agency hotly denies but which raises new questions about whether politicians get favored treatment on Florida’s highways.

Anybody have a guess what party this lawmaker was from...No need. Rep. Charles McBurney, R-Jacksonville.

Sounds like Louis Gohmert R-TX...

A National Park Service (NPS) police report said that Gohmert’s black Ford SUV was cited at 11:00 p.m. on March 13 for parking in a spot reserved for NPS vehicles at Washington’s Lincoln Memorial. Gohmert, said the report, was “rude and irate” in his confrontation with the officers.

“I was issued a ticket and I am a congressman and parked my vehicle in the NPS parking only because I have a Congress placard, see,” Gohmert said to one officer. “I am going to a meeting on the Hill and I am the one who oversees the National Park Services and Natural Resources.”

Damn, that's a shame, but power corrupts.

The OP quote says "lawmakers". Not "republicans". Maybe you need to learn to read.

It's an issue, but not even a huge issue to me because everybody knows it happens. The big issue to me is police brutality and misconduct.

But it does raise the question, are police trained on dishonesty? Can that in itself corrupt some people?

lawmakers should be fined double as they are the ones who pass the laws. if they dont like it, they can always choose to lose their vehicles instead.

get caught up here where I live doing that for any cop and you will find yourself out of a job. the sheriff is very tight with making sure the law applies to everyone including cops from other counties, states or districts.

Members of Congress are immune from arrest (except for treason or felony) while Congress is in session. It's in the Constitution.

All the cops around here in DC know that...or should.
