Should fund pure and applied science with federal funds? Or should any research enterprise prove that is can earn a profit in the near-term?

Absolutely we should fund science. It's one of the most important things we can do. Only working on science that is profitable in the short term is, well, short sighted. Long term success is achieved through long term, far reaching science.

No way, we need to spend that money on defense contracts and oil/bank subsidies!

The fact that it's even a question just goes to show how ridiculous our nation is.

Yes, the fact is pure research often leads to unanticipated discoveries that while incredibly useful are unlikely to be reached by for profit research.

Sure, because we want the same dynamic that has overtaken the post office, the DMV, the public school system, and Washington DC generally, to take over science. We want science to be like the war on drugs, where they spend $20 billion per year on interdiction, and the result is that drugs become more readily available, cheaper, and more potent. Of course we would want that.

Federal funding for science bought us computers and the internet, so I would hope so...or else people couldn't vote here in the first place.

I thought most of the government funded science research was conducted by universities.
