Lawrence Finer, director of domestic research for the Guttmacher Institute, said there was evidence that adolescent use of contraceptives had plateaued, or declined, adding that it was “an interesting coincidence” that this had happened just as the focus on abstinence-only education had left fewer students getting comprehensive sex education.
Advocates of abstinence-only education, however, had a different view.
“While this recent uptick is certainly disconcerting, it would be disingenuous to try to ascribe it abstinence education or any other single factor,” said Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association. “The overly sex-saturated culture certainly plays a part, with teen sex communicated almost as an expected rite of passage, without consequences, and that’s a dangerous message for young people, who tend to be risk-takers anyway.”
I'm going to post this over here from the other thread. The numbers are shocking!
"Students who participated in sexual abstinence programs were just as likely to have sex within a few years as those who did not, according to a long-awaited study mandated by Congress."
"The United States has the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and births in the western industrialized world. Teen pregnancy costs the United States at least $7 billion annually. The fact that just under 1/3 of all girls in the United States will get pregnant in their teenage years is a sobering thought."
It could not possibly be because EVERYTHING is pushing sex, could it? In the schools, music, movies, clothing, ads and in the press.
No, it could not possibly be that. A boy and girl alone on a desert island would eventually figure it out without Victoria Secret's help. Maybe it is that condoms are a 3000 year old technology and birth control pills aren't much improved in 60 years, cost $130/mo and must be taken daily without fail and require parental consent. Yah think maybe that's a little closer to the mark? The uptightness of the American Baby Boomer has wreaked untold havoc on the mental stability of their progeny. America is dead last in the developed world in every social category.
It seems like it doesn't matter what type of sex ed the kids get, though I have read that kids who get sex ed that includes birth control are more likely to use it than the kids who get the abstinence only education. Other than that, there seems to be no difference in sexual activity.
One thing that really scares me is if those numbers only represent pregnant girls, the mind boggles at the total number of teens having unprotected sex, and putting themselves at risk for acquiring STD's.
never had no problems with my daughters. they learned all about breeding on the ranch. hell it became just common sense. and i still aint a grampa. maybe they learned to good
