It is true that white males had stronger privilege in the 1950s than today. But that doesn't mean that all white males wish that they could oppress women and minorities. I'd much rather live in a society where respect is based on who we are.
I'm way too young to even have thought of life in the 1950s, but there were probably positive and negative aspects of it, just like in any time.
i agree with many posters, i am not sure we were better. we were more disciplined more obediant and had work ethic. we were better mothers and fathers and children and citizens, more frugal and debt free and wasted less we had better manners, but other than that, better is a a subjective term.
Nostalgia has a way of putting a beautiful golden glow on the past. That all comes from our natural tendency to only remember the happy and most vivid moments and our tendency to forget all the bad stuff that happened way back in the day.
Kids who grew up in the 50's are especially prone to how blissful their childhoods were. it is just the same now with kids who grew up in the 80's and 90's, and they too, will only become more nostalgic for those golden days as the years go by.
The fact is the 50's were a troubled decade full of fear, worry, and hard times. Pretty much like the 40's, the 60's, 70's, and every other decade of the last half of the 20th century. My grandparents looked back on 1919-1925 as being the best years ever, and they died in the 80's when they thought the country was going to hell in a handbasket.
It was certaqinly a much more peaceful life that I lead as a child i nthe 50's. We could go anyhwere wihout my mother worrying so much and didn't even lock our door. often people left their car keys on dash and rarely locked the doors. I left my bicyle with no lock in bike racks everywhere never taken.I think children now would feel like prisoners of society if they knew the difference.

u r right. we do tend to gold coat the past. but to be brutally honest i have heard people say that so much of recent years, boys will be boys. but when i was a kid we did not gang rape our teachers.
Nothing truthful about it...just because someone says the 50's were better you assume racist stuff.

I don't have to assume anything. Jim Crow segregation was still the law of the land in many states during the 50s. That alone, coupled with the second-class status of women, backs what I say. I need no other evidence.
No American policies should discriminate according to racial, ethnic or national origin, and our immigration policies were biased in favor of Europeans until 1965.
So it's better now that they're biased against them? You're all in favor of bias apparently, just the kind you favor.
